ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on assessment of a spinal cord injury in road traffic accident by paramedics (a case study of fmc abeokuta). Specifically, the study aimed to assess the practices and protocols followed by paramedics at FMC Abeokuta in evaluating spinal cord injuries (SCI) resulting from road traffic accidents, identify the challenges faced by paramedics in accurately diagnosing and managing spinal cord injuries in the context of road traffic accidents, and evaluate the effectiveness of assessment tools and techniques used by paramedics at FMC Abeokuta for identifying spinal cord injuries in road traffic accident victims. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection and was analysed using the frequency counts and percentages. A total of 100 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of staff of FMC Abeokuta. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that the assessment tools and techniques currently utilized by paramedics at FMC Abeokuta in identifying spinal cord injuries in road traffic accident victims is effective. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that Given the challenges associated with limited access to advanced diagnostic equipment, it is recommended that FMC Abeokuta invest in portable diagnostic tools specifically designed for on-site assessment of spinal cord injuries. This could include handheld ultrasound devices or portable X-ray machines that can be easily transported to the scene of road traffic accidents. By improving access to such equipment, paramedics can expedite the diagnostic process and make more accurate assessments of spinal cord injuries, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
